WHAT IS NO-SHAVE NOVEMBER?

Things tend to get pretty hairy each November. From playoffs to colder weather, there are a lot of reasons men tend to grow their facial hair more this time of year. Two major drivers for furrier faces in November are Movember and No-Shave November. Last time we dove into the specifics of November, so today we take a deeper look at No-Shave November (and yes, it is more than just a cutesy name to justify your facial hair to your boss).

Hairy History

While the exact origin of the term No-Shave November is almost impossible to pinpoint, the philanthropic No-Shave November we know today sprouted in 2009. That’s when members of the Chicagoland Hill family decided to use it as a means to raise money for charity and cancer awareness after their father passed away from colon cancer two years prior.

How it works

The idea is simple. During the month of November, stop shaving. Put your razor down — -be it for your face, legs (that’s right, women too!), or both — and donate the money you save from this modified grooming routine to charities working toward the elimination of cancer. No-Shave November itself is a family run, web-based 501(c)3 organization and to date, they have raised over $2 million dollars.
